Juniors, are you stressed because of you GPA’s? What is the reason for your low grades? Yes, because of the standardized tests. To make it clear what I mean by standardized tests are the tests and quizzes that create your grades. Did you have some type of test last week, how about this week? I know, due to the large amount of homework given everyday, we have to pull over nighters to get our work done. Teachers say we stay up late because we are procrastinating; however, there is no choice to stay up and finish our work since we do not have enough time to finish our work. I will let someone else discuss about the mass of homework’s. Anyways, I believe that standardized tests should not be the majority of what colleges look at and determine ones future.
Tests do not examine your knowledge, it more like testing your self whether you listened to the lectures in class or not. Teachers have a basic idea of what the test will be based on. Therefore they teach the information that they believe will help the students solve the tests. This is called “teaching to the test.” The environment of the classroom also shapes our grades. If we like the teacher we are motivated to do well in that class, or if were not motivated, we give up. Most tests are multiple-choice based. Honestly, since there is 4 or 5 given choice, we can either eliminate the wrong answers and get the answer or guess the answer. If students are given multiple-choice exams, it limits teaching and learning knowledge’s. Multiple question based tests does not help us go beyond our knowledge to answer the so what factor.
Since we are at the most important year of our high school year, being a junior is pressuring. Sometimes students will make the wrong decisions and meet academic’s dishonesty. Knowing that tests are majority of our grades, one will make the wrong choice, cheating, in order to improve ones test score.
Has anyone ever thought standardized testing could be biased against some students? There are some students who have disabilities: ADHD, language delays, visual impairments, and etc. Others have test anxiety, not having butterflies in their stomach but not being able to perform when taking a test. There are many international students who move abroad and due to the culture difference and the language difference, students may have a hard time understand the meaning of the text. There are slow learners who take time understanding the concept and who needs more time to memorize all the information. Lastly, based on your social status, this can change the grades of you test. The wealthier, the more education you can get.
